James Cameron has expressed his relief at becoming a New Zealand citizen following Donald Trump’s re-election as US president, describing America under Trump as moving away from “everything decent.” In an interview with New Zealand outlet Stuff, Cameron, the director of Titanic, voiced his horror at Trump’s second term, characterizing it as a step away from the country’s historical values, leaving America as “a hollow idea.” Cameron, who has owned a dairy farm in South Wairarapa since 2012, has long planned to move to New Zealand permanently. This plan follows his collaboration with Wellington’s Weta Digital, a visual effects studio that won an Oscar for its work on Cameron’s Avatar films. He acknowledged the global implications of US politics but prefers the more measured news coverage in New Zealand, finding solace in the lower profile of politics there compared to the U.S. Cameron stated that obtaining New Zealand citizenship is “imminent” and significant for him, akin to his positive experiences growing up in Canada. He also expressed his intention to recruit young talent into New Zealand’s film industry, emphasizing his plan to continue making films in Wellington and his appreciation for the people he works with there.
