Danish Supermarket Plans to Label Products as European or American – DW – 27.02.2025

The Danish Salling Group announced plans to introduce a black star on electronic price tags for European-made products to enable consumers to easily differentiate and choose these over American-made items. The decision was made in response to growing criticism in Denmark towards US President Donald Trump’s policies, such as his interest in acquiring control of Greenland, a Danish territory, through either purchase or potentially forceful means.

Danish shoppers have been showing anger towards Trump, prompting retailers such as the Salling Group, which operates major supermarkets, to provide an option for customers to purchase European brands instead of their American counterparts. The CEO of the Salling Group, Anders Hagh, stated that they will introduce a small star on electronic price tags in their supermarkets during March to indicate if a brand is owned by a European company. Hagh emphasized that the move was not intended to boycott US products, but rather to offer an additional service for customers who prefer to buy goods with European brands.

This trend of reducing US products on shelves and boycotting American-made items is not limited to Denmark; other European retailers and consumers are also considering using their purchasing power to express political dissent towards the policies of the Trump administration. This comes in the context of Trump’s threat to impose high tariffs on European products, accusing the EU of unfairly targeting the United States without providing any evidence.
