The NSW children’s guardian, Stephen Kinmond, has temporarily stepped down from his position while an independent inquiry investigates “serious and disturbing allegations.” The NSW government confirmed on Friday night that Kinmond agreed to step aside as the state’s child safety watchdog. Minister for families and communities, Kate Washington, stated that the allegations are severe and concerning, as the staff at the office of the children’s guardian are responsible for safeguarding vulnerable children and should feel secure in their workplace. She announced the establishment of an urgent independent inquiry. However, the exact nature of the allegations remains unclear. Kinmond expressed his support for the inquiry and stated that he was not aware of the specific allegations directed at him. He emphasized the need for further details before he can make further comments. Kinmond was appointed in 2022 following the sidelining of an independent recruitment process. Prior to this role, he served as the former chief executive of the Association of Children’s Welfare Agencies and as a NSW deputy ombudsman.
