Kim Jong Un’s sibling vows to retaliate against US Navy carrier’s presence in South Korea | Global Updates

The sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has warned the United States that her country will take retribution for what she calls American “provocations.” Specifically, she accuses the US of deploying military assets in South Korea, which she says are harming the security of her nation. The sister, named Kim Yo Jong, is a significant member of her brother’s administration.

In a statement broadcasted by the North Korean state media, she charged that the US is showing its “hostility and confrontational” nature towards North Korea. This follows the deployment of the USS Carl Vinson, along with other substantial American military resources, to the region, as well as recent military drills conducted jointly with South Korea.

Ms. Kim also stated that North Korea will respond in kind to the presence of the US aircraft carrier in the area, which she labeled as “confrontation hysteria.” She hinted that North Korea could increase the frequency of weapons testing to counter the perceived threats from the US assets stationed nearby.

Analysts believe that her statement suggests the possibility of North Korea launching powerful missiles intended to target either the American homeland or military installations in the region. The USS Carl Vinson and its accompanying strike group had recently arrived in the South Korean port of Busan to demonstrate the robustness of the US-South Korea military alliance in response to North Korean threats.

The carrier’s arrival followed North Korea’s recent cruise missile tests, the fourth such event this year. This development is contrary to earlier comments by US President Donald Trump, who expressed his intention to contact Kim Jong Un to resume diplomatic negotiations. North Korea has yet to react to Trump’s proposal.

Expert opinion indicates that North Korea is considering strategic-level actions to handle the regular deployment of American military assets in the Korean Peninsula, which they claim undermines their country’s security. The statement by Kim Yo Jong reflects the ongoing tension and distanced relations between the two nations, despite previous summits and diplomatic efforts towards denuclearization. These meetings, held between 2018 and 2019 during Trump’s first term, ultimately stalled over disputes regarding US-imposed economic sanctions on North Korea.
