Santanu Bhattacharya, the author behind the new book “Deviants,” has engaged in a conversation with FRANCE 24 about the shifting perceptions and attitudes towards homosexuality in India as depicted in his work. Bhattacharya’s novel illustrates the narrative of three gay men from the same family, set against the backdrop of their lives in the mid-1970s, the 1990s, and the present day. The story traces how these individuals are perceived and accepted (or not) during their respective times.
Prior to “Deviants,” Bhattacharya made his literary debut with “One Small Voice,” a work that earned high praise, being recognized as one of The Observer’s best debut novels of 2023. Additionally, it made the shortlist for the Society of Authors’ prestigious Gordon Bowker Volcano Prize. Bhattacharya shared his insights and reflections on the evolving landscape of homosexuality in India with our Perspective program.
