A plan for a European air force of 120 fighter jets to protect Ukrainians from Russian attacks may be viable without provoking further conflict. The plan, called Sky Shield, would be run by European forces separate from Nato and would operate within a “truce in the sky” that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed. The zone would cover Odesa and Lviv but not the frontline or the east of Ukraine. Advocates of the plan argue it would be more impactful than sending 10,000 ground troops from Europe. Proponents of the plan include several military and political figures from Europe and the US. Experts working with Ukraine’s military developed the idea, but its prospects are unclear.
