The French President, Emmanuel Macron, responded to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, by declaring him an “imperialist” who seeks to “rewrite history”. This was in response to Putin’s comparison of Macron’s idea to expand France’s nuclear umbrella to its European allies to Napoleon Bonaparte’s ill-fated conquest of Russia in 1812.
