More than 500 people may have suffered torture or starvation and were subsequently buried in a secret mass grave north of Khartoum, according to evidence examined by the Guardian. An investigation uncovered a previously unknown detention center at a base taken over by the Sudanese military where manacles hung from doors, and bloodstains littered the floors. People held captive at the detention center reported enduring repeated torture from their captors.
Near the detention center, researchers found a large burial site holding at least 550 unmarked graves, many of which were newly dug and some containing multiple bodies. The discovery suggests that this may be one of the worst war crimes to occur during Sudan’s civil conflict.
Survivors from the detention center claimed many died in captivity and were buried nearby. Medical examination of these survivors revealed extensive signs of torture and malnutrition. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group involved in controlling the base, are believed to be responsible for these atrocities.
Satellite images confirm the absence of graves at the base before the conflict began in April 2023. The findings come as RSF has been accused of committing severe human rights abuses throughout the conflict, with international organizations calling for independent investigations into these potential war crimes.
