Zughayer, speaking after his release, refused to discuss whether the October 7 attacks advanced the Palestinian national cause. Some Palestinians view the attacks as a mistake that prompted Israel’s harsh military response. Zughayer’s family held a subdued celebration to welcome him back, mindful of Israeli restrictions on such gatherings.
During his imprisonment, Zughayer learned Hebrew, earned a master’s degree from an Israeli university, and became a top member of Hamas’s prison leadership. He expressed mixed views on Israeli society and said that he does not feel remorse for his actions.
The release of hostages and prisoners has sparked intense and conflicting emotions on both sides. While some families have found solace in the return of their loved ones, others are reminded of the pain and loss caused by the conflict.
