Firefighters in New York were still battling at least one brush fire in a wooded area of Long Island on Sunday, focusing on the wealthy coastal area known as the Hamptons, which officials warned was at risk due to high wind gusts that could spark more fires.
Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, declared a state of emergency on Saturday after four separate fires began spreading across a long strip of land that stretches over 100 miles east from New York City towards the Atlantic Ocean.
A large fire in Long Island’s Pine Barrens region has led to road closures and the evacuation of a military base.
By Sunday morning, three of the fires had been brought under control, while one continued to burn in the area of Westhampton, according to Michael Martino, a spokesperson for Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine.
Local fire crews, along with support from the air national guard, managed to contain approximately 80% of the fire by working through the night, Martino said.
Martino added that the Suffolk County police department’s arson squad was investigating the fire, although there was no immediate indication of arson.
At least two commercial buildings sustained damage and a firefighter was airlifted to a hospital on Saturday for burns to their face.
Large clouds of smoke and towering flames were observed along the Sunrise Highway that leads to the Hamptons, a historic coastal area known for its beautiful beaches and the summer homes of many wealthy individuals.
The National Weather Service forecasted wind gusts up to 30mph for Sunday, making efforts to quench the still-active parts of the fire more challenging.
Ed Romaine, Suffolk County Executive, mentioned at a news conference that the wind was the main difficulty in fighting the fire.
About 15 miles to the west, authorities were keeping an eye on a small brush fire along the Sunrise Highway early on Sunday, according to Brookhaven Town Supervisor Daniel Panico.
