Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila on Tuesday, following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court, which accuses him of crimes against humanity during his war on drugs. According to human rights groups, tens of thousands of Filipinos were executed during this period.

Duterte’s arrest occurred upon his return from a trip to Hong Kong, as confirmed by the Philippine government. Despite multiple allegations against him, Duterte, 79, who left office in 2022, has maintained his influential position as a populist firebrand in Philippine politics. However, only a few individuals have been convicted in connection with the killings thus far.
