A group of M23 rebels, supported by Rwandan troops, has been fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite criticism from the United States, China, and the United Nations, Rwanda’s status as a popular destination for investors, tourists, athletes, and celebrities remains unchanged. It has become a top investment location in Africa and reduced its dependence on the United States by entering trade relationships with countries such as Turkey, Singapore, and Qatar. Rwanda has also positioned itself as a reliable security partner in Africa and currently contributes the second-highest number of peacekeepers to the United Nations. However, its involvement in the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo has raised concerns and could potentially harm Rwanda’s tourism and infrastructure spending. The conflicting images presented by Rwanda’s involvement in the conflict and its push for tourism and investment have led to boycott calls, but organizations such as the NBA and various soccer teams have not publicly responded.
