Peter Dutton has denied claims that he “deliberately” avoided finding out about key details of the Dural caravan plot, which authorities later declared was a fake terrorism plot orchestrated by organized crime.
In response to criticism from Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, who said Dutton did not take up an offer to be briefed about the incident, the opposition leader accused Burke of attempting to find political gain from a national security issue.
The Australian Federal Police revealed that the caravan incident was allegedly staged by criminals to cause fear for personal gain, not to carry out a mass casualty event in Sydney.
The AFP’s Deputy Commissioner, Krissy Barrett, stated that investigators quickly suspected the plot to be a fabricated terrorism incident, essentially a criminal scam.
Following these revelations, Dutton and the opposition have questioned the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, about when he was briefed regarding the incident and why he did not take the information more seriously.
