On Monday, the Syrian interim government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) agreed to integrate SDF institutions into the new government, giving the central government control over border checkpoints, airports, and oil and gas fields in the de facto autonomous regions in northern and northeastern Syria. The agreement, expected to be implemented by the end of the year, was signed by President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF leader Mazloum Abdi. Abdi called the deal a “real opportunity to build a new Syria” and emphasized his commitment to building a better future for all Syrians. The Kurdish community will be guaranteed citizenship and constitutional rights under the agreement, including linguistic rights. The YPG of the SDF is considered an offshoot of the PKK, and it is still unknown how this agreement will affect the relationship between Turkey and the Kurds in Syria. The interim government has also ended its operation against Assad loyalists in the Alawite-majority region along the Levantine coast.
