Pakistan’s monsoon brides: A climate change crisis

Pakistan, a nation highly susceptible to the effects of climate change, ranks as the sixth country with the most teenage marriages worldwide. This concerning trend has been exacerbated in recent years, partly as a consequence of climate change. In particularly Sindh, the southern province, where annual summer monsoons and record-high temperatures are common, parents frequently arrange marriages for their young daughters following environmental disasters for financial benefits. This phenomenon has become especially pronounced in the aftermath of the severe 2022 floods, which flooded a third of the country. Consequently, child marriages have seen a significant increase among the surviving families in affected villages. This alarming situation is reported by Shahzaib Wahlah and Sonia Ghezali, in collaboration with Aftab Memon.
