Maltese singer’s Eurovision song reformulated following objection to strong language | Eurovision update

A Eurovision contestant has rewritten her song after a word in the lyrics was perceived as a swear word in English.

Miriana Conte’s original song was titled Kant, which means singing in Maltese.

The song underwent changes, incorporating the voice of BBC economics editor Faisal Islam, who had discussed with Conte on Newsnight the urgency to alter the song following a complaint.

Eurovision released an updated music video for the rebranded track, now titled Serving, which omits the controversial word.

The video takes a documentary-style approach, showcasing commentary about Conte and her song, featuring Islam’s previous suggestions for modifying the song, such as “Serving brunch, maybe, I don’t know.”

Conte clarified to Newsnight that her intention was not to offend anyone; for her, the word “kant” meant “I’m serving singing.”

She expressed disappointment to the European Broadcasting Union over the complaint and vowed to continue, stating “the show will go on – Diva NOT down.”

Maltese news reported that the BBC filed the complaint with EBU.

Islam responded to his use in the music video with a laughing emoji and a tweet, “well, well, well,” and the video was featured during Newsnight’s credits.

The UK will be represented at Eurovision 2025 by the all-female trio Remember Monday with their song, What the Hell Just Happened?

Before last year’s contest, the EBU faced backlash for allowing Israel’s representative to perform amidst the ongoing Gaza war, leading to an internal review and a new code of conduct.

The Eurovision final will be held in Basel, Switzerland, on 17 May, with semi-finals on 13 and 15 May.
