A major anti-government protest has taken place in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The rally, led by students, marks the culmination of several months of anti-corruption protests which have posed the biggest challenge to President Aleksandar Vucic’s decade-long rule. Demonstrators have been in conflict with Mr Vucic’s supporters, who have been camping inside a ring of tractors in Pionirski Park, guarded by hundreds of riot police. The president previously warned of alleged plans for unrest and threatened arrest or tough sentences for any incidents. During the tensions, there were sporadic instances of violence, including a car being driven into protesters in the Zarkovo suburb and an attack on a student and a university lecturer in central Belgrade. Despite this, the atmosphere among protesters remains jubilant, with hundreds of veteran soldiers and bikers lining up along the protest route to pledge allegiance to the students. The protests began last December after 15 people died in a railway station roof collapse in the city of Novi Sad, blamed on corruption under the current government. In response, prosecutors have charged 13 people over the incident and the government launched an anti-corruption campaign, but security guards are now protecting the office of the president.
