According to reports, a devastating nightclub fire in Kocani, North Macedonia, has claimed the lives of at least 50 people.

The fire is believed to have started after fireworks were ignited inside the club early Sunday morning, as reported by Reuters.

A statement from the public prosecutor’s office indicates that the exact number of victims and injured is currently being ascertained – with the state news agency citing the interior ministry to report a death toll of “at least 50”.

Nova Makedonija adds that numerous individuals have been injured and are receiving treatment at Kocani General Hospital.

The country’s prime minister, Hristijan Mickoski, is en route to the location, as per the report.
