President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has accepted the proposed plan, but there is no commitment yet from Russia for a truce. Both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss the situation this week. Russia has not agreed to a US-mediated ceasefire proposal with Ukraine. Senior diplomat and special envoy Steve Witkoff said in a CNN interview that the two countries’ leaders will have a positive conversation. Steve Rubin and Sergey Lavrov, the US Secretary of State and Russian counterpart, respectively, previously discussed the implementation of agreements reached at a recent US-Russia summit in Saudi Arabia. The first high-level meeting between the US and Russia since the invasion in February 2022 took place in Riyadh. Time will tell if the agreement is implemented while continuing communication between the two nations.
