U.S. defied court order with Venezuelan deportations

Despite the Trump administration denying that it violated a judge’s order, it deported hundreds of Venezuelan immigrants accused of being gang members to a prison in El Salvador over the weekend. The White House claimed that the president has the authority to quickly expel foreign enemies under an 18th-century law meant for wartime. Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, also stated that federal courts lack jurisdiction over the president’s actions regarding foreign affairs and his power to expel foreign enemies.

Timing: The judge issued the order shortly before 7 p.m. on Saturday in Washington, but video from El Salvador shows deportees disembarking at night. El Salvador is two hours behind Washington, and its president, Nayib Bukele, posted a screenshot about the judge’s order with a message: “Oopsie… Too late.”

Context: President Trump signed an executive order on Friday invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, which allows for summary deportations of people from countries at war with the U.S. The Venezuelan government stated that applying the act to this situation could “constitute a crime against humanity.”

Netanyahu plans to remove Israeli intelligence chief

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his intention to dismiss Ronen Bar, the director of Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic intelligence agency. This move has raised concerns among critics that Netanyahu is attempting to undermine the agency’s independence. Members of Netanyahu’s coalition have demanded Bar’s dismissal, claiming he undermined the prime minister. Tensions exist between Netanyahu and security officials regarding the handling of the war in Gaza and ongoing Shin Bet investigations into allegations against several Netanyahu aides.

Ukraine’s campaign in Russia nears conclusion

Ukrainian troops have nearly completed their withdrawal from Russia’s Kursk region, as the monthslong campaign to seize and occupy Russian territory appears to be ending due to relentless airstrikes and drone assaults. The fighting in Kursk is now focused on controlling the best defensive positions to prevent Russian advances into Ukraine’s Sumy region.
