Gaza suffers heavy casualties as Israeli attacks claim hundreds of lives – DW – March 18, 2025

The relatives of the Israeli hostages who remain captive in the Gaza Strip, held by Hamas, are divided over how to secure their loved ones’ release. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum has urged its supporters to assemble in Jerusalem to demonstrate against Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza, arguing that this military action hinders negotiations and endangers the hostages.

The forum stated in a WhatsApp message, “In response to Israel’s decision to restart military operations, which puts 59 hostages in extreme peril, their families are heading to Jerusalem to appeal to the Israeli public to join them in solidarity.” They emphasize the urgency of the situation, asserting that each day’s delay amplifies the danger for the hostages, and that military pressure might further jeopardize their lives and impede efforts for a safe return.

Conversely, another group, the Tikva Forum of Hostages’ Families, has endorsed the resumed fighting, supporting the Israeli government’s strategy. In a statement named “All or Hell,” they assert, “The recent weeks have confirmed our stance – Hamas will never release all the hostages voluntarily.”

This group contends that only through sustained and intense military pressure, including a complete blockade with disruptions to essential services like electricity and water, and the potential occupation of territories, can Hamas be forced to capitulate, pleading for a ceasefire and a comprehensive agreement that would bring home ALL hostages simultaneously.

The group predicts that if strikes continue with vigor and without pause, all hostages could return in one convoy. Israeli officials report that 59 hostages are detained in Gaza, with between 16 to 24 still believed to be alive.
