Israel government approves return of far right’s Ben Gvir as minister

The Israeli government had “unanimously approved” his proposal to reappoint far-right politician Itamar Ben Gvir as national security minister,  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s office said.

Ben Gvir and his Israeli Otzma Yehudit party left Netanyahu’s government in January after Israel agreed to a ceasefire with Hamas.

With the ceasefire now broken, the party announced its intention to return to the Knesset.

“Likud [Netanyahu’s right-wing party] and Otzma Yehudit have agreed that the Otzma Yehudit faction will return to the Israeli government today, and the ministers of Otzma Yehudit will resume their positions,” the parties said in a joint statement.

Netanyahu is dependent on Ben Gvir’s support to pass a budget through the Knesset and avoid fresh parliamentary elections.

Welcome to DW’s coverage of the latest updates from the Middle East.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, which killed at least 400 people, were “only the beginning.”

He added that future negotiations with Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by Germany, the EU, the US, and some Arab states, “will take place only under fire.”

Following his pronouncements, more people were killed in Israeli air strikes overnight on the Palestinian territory.

This blog will focus on the repercussions of Israel’s actions and related developments in other conflict areas.
