The U.S. government has detained an Indian student at Washington’s Georgetown University on allegations that he poses a threat to U.S. foreign policy, according to his lawyer. The Department of Homeland Security claims the student, Badar Khan Suri, has ties to Hamas and spread propaganda for the group on social media. However, no evidence was cited to support these allegations, and Suri’s lawyer argues that the real issue lies with the U.S. government’s policies if they deem a scholar focused on conflict resolution to be harmful. Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown’s Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, is awaiting a court date in immigration court. His wife, a U.S. citizen from Gaza, is also under scrutiny for her activism. This comes amid President Trump’s efforts to deport individuals involved in pro-Palestinian protests, drawing criticism from civil rights and immigrant advocacy groups.
