Hawaii Volcano Observatory to be Relocated Due to Federal Budget Cuts as Lava Fountains Reach 700 Feet in Height

Hawaii’s most active volcano, Kilauea, erupted on Thursday, with lava fountains reaching heights of up to 700ft. The US Geological Survey has been providing updates on the eruptions. However, the scientists and their equipment at the Geological Survey office in Hilo may be evicted due to federal government cost-cutting measures implemented by Elon Musk’s “department of government efficiency.” The office is on an internal list of leases that are set to be cancelled on September 30th. It is unclear how this will affect the observatory’s research and public services. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has been monitoring the islands’ geologic activity for over a century, providing updates to the public on current activity and potential hazards.
