In Peru, a farmer is taking legal action against a German energy corporation – DW – March 17, 2025

Every summer, Saul Luciano Lliuya grows corn, potatoes, and quinoa, while in winter, he takes tourists to the Peruvian Andes. However, he is currently in the global spotlight due to a trial with German energy company RWE over a climate lawsuit at the Higher Regional Court in Hamm, Germany. Lliuya claimed that his house was threatened by increasing water levels in a glacial lake caused by climate change. He argued that RWE should take responsibility and contribute to the costs of protecting his house and village. RWE denied this, saying the company complies with the legal rules, and claimed that attributing the effects of climate change to a single emitter would be legally incorrect. At stake is the question of how much responsibility major polluters should take for climate change, which has been a growing issue in international and national climate lawsuits.
