The status of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, located in Zaporizhzhia, remains uncertain as it continues to be under Russian control. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that nuclear power plants in Ukraine are considered national assets, stating that they are owned by the state and not by private entities. This statement was made during a press conference in Norway on Thursday.
This comes after a phone call between Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump, in which Trump reportedly suggested transferring the ownership of Ukraine’s power plants to the US for long-term security as per an American statement. However, Zelenskyy clarified that the conversation specifically focused on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) which has been under Russian occupation since the start of the war.
Despite the plant being connected to Ukraine’s energy grid without generating electricity, the extent of US involvement remains undefined.
