Marcin Majerkiewicz, aged 42, has been found guilty at Manchester Crown Court for the murder of his 67-year-old friend, Stuart Everett, known as Benny. The brutal attack took place at their shared house in Eccles on either 27 or 28 March of the previous year. Majerkiewicz then dismembered Everett’s body, with parts found in parks and nature reserves across Greater Manchester.
Despite being described as “jolly” and “someone who everyone got on with” by friends, Everett met a gruesome end at the hands of Majerkiewicz. The perpetrator attempted to cover up his crime by sending birthday cards to family members and using his victim’s phone and bank accounts.
The investigation began after a member of the public discovered a part of Everett’s body at Kersal Dale nature reserve on 4 April 2024. Detectives spent thousands of hours analyzing CCTV footage to track down the suspect, referred to as “heavy bag man,” due to his struggle with carrying a large shopping bag near where the body parts were found.
Majerkiewicz was identified when he was spotted getting on a bus, matching the description of “heavy bag man.” Upon searching him, authorities found Everett’s phone and bank cards, leading to the identification of the victim.
During the two-and-a-half-week trial, it was revealed that Everett had considered Majerkiewicz his “partner” in emails and that the pair had a close relationship. Majerkiewicz, originally from Poland, had lived with Everett in the house after splitting with his ex-partner.
The motive behind Majerkiewicz’s actions remains unknown, as he did not present a defense in court. A Home Office pathologist testified that Everett’s remains showed evidence of being struck with a hammer-like object and cut up with hand tools.
Further body parts were discovered in green spaces, with one package found by a member of the public. Majerkiewicz assumed Everett’s identity, using his phone and bank accounts while sending birthday cards and texts to family and friends as if from the victim himself.
Det Ch Supt Lewis Hughes, the senior investigating officer, described the case as “rarely seen complexity and scale.” He emphasized the dedication of the detectives in ensuring justice for the victim and respecting the family throughout the process. Majerkiewicz is set to be sentenced at a later date.
