The Sudanese army has claimed control over the headquarters of the Central Bank from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as part of their ongoing advances in the capital. According to Nabil Abdallah, an army spokesman, soldiers killed hundreds of militia members who attempted to escape from central Khartoum. This takeover follows the army’s seizure of the presidential palace, a significant military victory. However, the RSF retaliated with a drone attack that resulted in the deaths of three journalists and several army personnel. The battle for control over the government and financial district could further strengthen the army’s hold on the capital and potentially give them a significant advantage in the conflict. Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reported that the army has been making steady gains in different parts of the capital, but the RSF remains present in some areas. The conflict between the military and the RSF has divided the country, with the army controlling the eastern, northern, and parts of the southeastern areas, and the RSF controlling the western and southwestern regions. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has led to a deep humanitarian crisis in Sudan, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of over 12 million people.
