On Monday, South Korea’s Constitutional Court nullified the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, reinstating him as the acting leader. The court did not make a decision regarding President Yoon Suk Yeol’s separate impeachment. Despite Han’s return, the ruling is not expected to influence the upcoming verdict on Yoon. With Han no longer impeached, Yoon’s supporters may become more active in their political attacks against the opposition. Han has stated that he will prioritize urgent issues, including the changing global trade landscape, and promote national unity. The court will rule separately on Yoon’s impeachment, which could lead to an election for a new president if upheld or restore his powers if overturned. Massive rallies have divided South Korea, with criticisms and support for Yoon’s martial law implementation. The main opposition Democratic Party has also submitted an impeachment motion against the current acting President, Choi Sang-mok. The controversy surrounding Yoon’s martial law decree remains at the center of the political divide.
