The government is committed to maintaining the sustainability and success of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), even though the opposition has accused them of attempting to cut funding. The program is currently worth $47 billion and is growing at a fast rate. The opposition claims that the NDIS has gotten out of control and that Labor’s proposed changes will not be enough to curb its growth. However, the government emphasizes that they will not cut funding for the NDIS. The NDIS currently makes up about 1.7% of Australia’s GDP and is expected to rise to 2.1% by 2033-34. While concerns have been raised that the disabled community is being used as a “political football,” the opposition claims that it is committed to ensuring the NDIS remains fit for purpose and sustainable for future generations.
