Groundbreaking initiative by Welsh National Opera implies that music may have a positive impact on chronic pain management.

Wales, known for its beautiful landscapes and vibrant music, is now recognized for harnessing the power of music to help individuals in managing persistent pain. A groundbreaking project led by Welsh National Opera (WNO) has discovered that music, particularly singing and breathing exercises, can provide relief to those suffering from chronic ailments. Participants in WNO’s pain management program reported reduced pain levels and improved mental health as a result of their involvement. June Evans, a 67-year-old from Llandrindod Wells, who has several serious illnesses including a heart condition, credits the program with transforming her life. She no longer feels anxious and frightened, and has found joy in simple activities like going for a walk in the park. According to Owen Hughes, the national clinical lead for persistent pain at NHS Wales, the program has empowered participants to join choirs and even consider returning to work. The success of the WNO’s project underscores the profound impact music can have on health and well-being.
