One person was killed and at least one other was seriously injured when a gunman opened fire near the northern Israeli city of Haifa on Monday, according to first responders. The Israeli police stated that they had “neutralized” the suspect at a junction just outside the city. The police did not specify the nationality of the attacker but referred to the person as a “terrorist.”
The attacker reportedly drove into a group of people at a bus stop and began attacking with a knife before opening fire. A 75-year-old man was killed in the gunfire, and a 20-year-old man was receiving urgent treatment for his injuries. The victim had been hit by a vehicle and received penetrating injuries in the attack.
Monday’s attack was the first since Israel ended a negotiated ceasefire with the Hamas militant group in Gaza and resumed strikes and a ground offensive. Since the beginning of the war with Hamas, Palestinian militants have carried out numerous attacks in Israel, and Israeli strikes have resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to data from the enclave’s Health Ministry.
