A luminous blue spiral was observed in European skies, setting off a wave of social media discussions. Sightings of this phenomenon were recorded across several European countries including the UK, France, Norway, Germany, Ukraine, Denmark, and Poland.
The spiral, which remained visible for a brief period before disappearing, has been attributed to the aftermath of a SpaceX rocket launch in the United States, as per the UK’s national weather agency, the Met Office. According to their explanation, the rocket’s exhaust plume, now frozen, appears to be rotating within the atmosphere, reflecting sunlight and thus giving the illusion of a spiral shape in the sky.
Elon Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX, confirmed the launch of their Falcon 9 rocket from Florida on Monday at approximately 1:50 pm local time (6:50 pm CET), which was commissioned for a classified mission by the US government’s National Reconnaissance Office. The reusable two-stage Falcon 9 rocket, upon delivering its payload into space, releases any residual fuel, creating a swirling pattern due to the rocket’s movements. This process, occurring at high altitudes, causes the fuel to freeze. It becomes visible from Earth as light reflects off the layers of ice crystals in the frozen fuel.
Therefore, the awe-inspiring swirls seen blighting the skies were indeed a spectacle of modern space exploration technology rather than any cosmic mystery.
