A former pro-democracy campaigner from Hong Kong has received a threatening letter offering his colleagues a substantial sum for information on his family, following China’s accusations of interference by the Australian government. The letter, which claims the recipient is wanted for national security offenses and collusion with a foreign country, was sent to Ted Hui’s law firm in Adelaide. Hui, who fled to Australia in 2019, denies allegations of leaving Hong Kong with $3 million in proceeds of crime and accuses the claims of being “fictitious.” Preceding this incident, a fake pamphlet falsely linking Hui to a pro-Israel stance was distributed to mosques, criticized as a ‘crude attempt’ to weaponize antisemitism for foreign interference purposes. The Australian government, through Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong, stated they would address these incidents with China and that they would “not accept any one of our citizens… being bullied or harassed or threatened by a foreign power.” China’s foreign ministry has deemed Australia’s stance an interference in its domestic affairs and has criticized the country for undermining Hong Kong’s rule of law. Hui, sharing the content of the letter, said he was doing so to confront the Hong Kong Communist Party and affirmed his commitment to advocating for Hong Kong’s freedom.
