A tourist submarine has sunk in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt, resulting in at least four deaths, according to the Russian Embassy and local news sources. The incident occurred on Thursday and involved a submarine with approximately 45 people on board, who were reportedly all Russian citizens. It was traveling near Hurghada, a tourist destination situated about 300 miles southeast of Cairo.
The embassy’s statement confirmed the fatalities and that all passengers were from Russia. Meanwhile, local media has reported a higher death toll of at least six, though this figure has yet to be confirmed. Nine individuals were injured and received treatment at a nearby hospital, while 29 people were rescued from the water.
This incident is not Egypt’s first with tourist vessel mishaps. In November of last year, four people lost their lives when a boat carrying 44 passengers sank during a week-long diving tour that departed from Marsa Alam, another Red Sea resort near Hurghada. Commercial submarines are a common tourist attraction in the area for those interested in exploring the coral reefs.
