Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen expressed his dissatisfaction with the tone of US Vice President JD Vance’s comments that Copenhagen had not done enough for Greenland. Rasmussen stated that although they are open to criticism, the tone in which it is delivered is not how one speaks to close allies, emphasizing that Denmark and the United States are still close allies.
During a visit to the US military Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, Vance criticized Denmark’s investment in Greenland’s people and infrastructure, stating that it has not done a good job in supporting the Greenlandic population and the security of the region.
The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, also responded to Vance’s comments, referencing Denmark’s support for the US in Iraq and Afghanistan and refuting Vance’s claims as inaccurate. The discussion around Greenland has escalated with the US showing interest in the island for strategic and security reasons, including its location in the Arctic and potential mineral and oil reserves. However, any notion of the US taking over Greenland has been dismissed by Greenlanders, their political leaders, and Danish officials.
