The head of Primark has stepped down and admitted to a “mistake in judgment” after a woman made accusations about his behavior outside of work. This information was shared by the company’s owner, Associated British Foods (ABF). ABF stated that Paul Marchant cooperated fully with their investigation, acknowledged that his actions were below their expectations, and resigned immediately. Marchant has since apologized to the affected individual, the ABF board, his colleagues at Primark, and other individuals connected to the business. ABF’s CEO, George Weston, expressed significant disappointment, emphasizing that integrity is crucial for building and running a business in the long term. He also affirmed that treating colleagues and others with respect and dignity is central to the company’s culture. The company pledged to continue supporting the person who raised these concerns. Marchant, who joined Primark in 2009 and became CEO that same year, previously worked for Debenhams, Topman, River Island, and New Look. ABF is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment for all.
Eoin Tonge, ABF’s finance director, will take over as Primark’s interim CEO, and Joana Edwards, the group financial controller, will serve as interim finance director.
