In 2019, Srija became the first transgender woman to legally marry in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu after a historic court ruling. A new documentary, Amma’s Pride, chronicles Srija’s battle for state recognition of her marriage and the unwavering support of her mother, Valli. Valli, a single parent, has been a pillar of strength and support for Srija throughout her life, helping to pay for her gender reassignment and caring for her afterwards. Srija and Arun’s attempt to register their marriage was initially rejected due to the 1955 Hindu Marriage Act defining marriage as a union between a “bride” and a “groom.” However, in 2019, the Madras High Court upheld their right to marry, marking a pivotal step in the acceptance of the transgender community in India. Despite facing hostility and negative scrutiny, including Arun’s job loss, the couple is grateful for their support system and hopes that their story will help challenge misconceptions about trans individuals. Srija currently works as a manager for a private company and aspires to become a mother and one day, a grandmother. The documentary Ann’s Pride premieres at international film festivals to celebrate International Trans Day of Visibility, highlighting the importance of family acceptance and community support.
