Islamist extremism in Bangladesh is rising in the wake of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ousting. Religious fundamentalists are asserting control over women’s bodies, enforcing strict conservative rules, and advocating for an Islamic government. Women students who led Hasina’s ousting face challenges from religious populism that puts women and religious minorities at risk. Leaders like Muhammad Yunus are accused of not pushing back enough against the extremist forces for fear of democratic instability. Bangladesh reflects a regional trend of fundamentalism, with neighboring countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Myanmar experiencing similar extremist movements. Though there is fear of the country moving towards extremism, hope remains due to the integration of women in the economy and Bengali culture.
