Multiple people injured in gas pipeline blaze – DW – 04/01/2025

At least 33 people suffered injuries when a fire erupted at a gas pipeline managed by Petronas, Malaysia’s state-owned energy corporation, according to the fire department.

Six individuals injured in the blaze required hospitalization, stated the officials.

The occurrence took place near the capital Kuala Lumpur and prompted several residents to evacuate their homes.

What is known about the fire?

The incident transpired during the Eid festivities and was catalyzed by “a gas pipeline leak extending around 500 meters (1,600 feet),” as per Selangor state fire officials.

The valve of the compromised pipeline has been closed, the statement affirmed.

Witnesses attested that the infierno was visible from several kilometers (miles) away.

Seven residents were rescued from their homes which caught alight, the statement declared.

Selangor Disaster Management Committee chairperson Mohd Najwan Halimi informed Bernama, a national news agency, about individuals trapped in houses in the village of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru and that rescue operations were in progress.

"Without warning, we heard a loud bang, followed by chaos," recounted a resident near the fire site in The Star newspaper.

“We immediately left our house and saw others leaving as well.

The Eid celebrations signify the conclusion of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
