Tensions are running high as the U.S. works to reach a deal to end the long-standing Ukraine-Russia war. While a German official expressed doubt about the effectiveness of the Washington-led talks, a Chinese official provided a more optimistic perspective on the ceasefire efforts. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine, urged Europe to support Ukraine and warned the U.S. not to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stalling tactics. In contrast, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi disagreed with Baerbock’s assessment, stating that progress has been made in the talks. China has provided diplomatic support and economic partnership to Russia throughout the conflict. President Donald Trump agreed with China’s assessment, stating that progress has been made, but still expressed frustration with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, criticizing the “tremendous hatred” between the two leaders. Trump also mentioned that if a deal cannot be reached, he will consider imposing secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia. The U.S. has struggled to secure an immediate 30-day ceasefire deal, with Moscow agreeing to a truce “in principle.” The conflict has persisted for more than three years.
