‘Dallas’ event explored: ‘JFK’ filmmaker Oliver Stone seeks inquiry regarding head of state murder

Director Oliver Stone, celebrated for his Oscar-winning film “JFK” which depicted the assassination of President John F. Kennedy as a government conspiracy, has called for a new congressional investigation into the incident. Stone, now 78, provided testimony at a hearing of the House Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, following the release of thousands of government documents related to Kennedy’s assassination last month.

Stone’s film, released in 1991, was both critically acclaimed and controversial, earning eight Oscar nominations and winning two awards, while also grossing over $200 million. Stone views his film as a counter-narrative to the official Warren Commission Report, which concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald, a former Marine, acted alone in assassinating Kennedy. Stone argues that the delayed release of unredacted records has obscured the truth, hindering a clear understanding of who was responsible for Kennedy’s murder.

During his testimony, Stone advocated for a new investigation that is “outside all political considerations” and begins “at the scene of the crime,” urging for a reevaluation of all evidence from the day of the assassination. He questions the public’s trust in government, emphasizing, “This is our democracy. This is our presidency. It belongs to us.”

Experts have largely concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald did indeed act alone in killing Kennedy on November 22, 1963, while on a motorcade route in Dallas. The released documents under President Donald Trump’s order did not reveal any new evidence to contradict this conclusion; however, some documents were found to contain previously redacted information, including Social Security numbers, causing discontent over privacy concerns.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, chair of the task force, suggested that previous administrations had been obstructive in releasing information regarding the assassination. The task force also invited Jefferson Morley and James DiEugenio, prominent figures who have published works suggesting conspiracy theories about Kennedy’s assassination. Morley is the editor of the JFK Facts blog and the vice president of the Mary Ferrell Foundation, which houses files related to the assassination.

The last congressional investigation into Kennedy’s assassination concluded in 1978, finding that while there was not enough evidence to firmly say it was a conspiracy, Kennedy “probably was assassinated as a result of a conspiracy.” A Senate committee investigation in 1976 could not find enough evidence to support a conspiracy theory. The Warren Commission, appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, originally determined that Oswald fired on Kennedy’s motorcade from a sniper’s hideout on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository.

Oswald was arrested within 90 minutes of the assassination, and two days later, his life ended abruptly when Jack Ruby, a nightclub owner, shot him during a live broadcast of a jail transfer.
