Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Wednesday that the government will invest €25 billion ($27 billion) in the country’s military through 2036. Mitsotakis called this the “most drastic” defense transformation in Greece’s modern history, including anti-aircraft defense systems, drones, and satellites. The announcement comes in response to pressure from the US for NATO allies to increase defence spending, and is part of a push to modernize outdated infrastructure and equipment affected by the 2008-2017 financial crisis. Greece already spends 3% of its GDP on defense, in line with NATO rules, but US President Donald Trump has been growing increasingly impatient with allies who do not prioritize their militaries. As Trump prepared to announce new tariffs on Wednesday, Mitsotakis warned that they could majorly destabilize the global economy.
