Details emerge on the death of legendary Bollywood actor, Manoj Kumar – DW – 04/04/2025

On Friday, renowned Indian actor Manoj Kumar passed away at the age of 87. Reports indicate that he breathed his last in Mumbai due to heart-related issues. Kumar was affectionately known as “Bharat Kumar” owing to the patriotic elements depicted in his films, which primarily centered around themes of unity and national pride. Notably, “Bharat” is an ancient Sanskrit term for India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the late actor, acknowledging Kumar’s movies as an inspiration that ignited a “spirit of national pride” and would continue to inspire future generations. Kumar was also associated with Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Manoj Kumar, who embarked on his acting career in the 1950s, was honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest accolade in Indian cinema. He is best remembered for his roles in patriotic-themed movies such as “Upkar” (1967), “Purab Aur Pachhim” (1970), and “Kranti” (1981), among others.
