The United States, under President Donald Trump, is reassessing its military engagement in different parts of the world. In defense of keeping troops on the continent, the head of the US Africa Command, General Michael E Langley, emphasizes the importance of maintaining troops in Africa. He believes it is crucial for countering threats to the US and strengthening partnerships while promoting stability.
General Langley explained that Africa is a place where terrorists operate, taking advantage of the conditions there to grow and spread their ideology. He warned the Senate Armed Services Committee that if groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda continue to expand, they will directly threaten the US homeland.
The USAFRICOM is aware of these challenges and is making informed decisions to address them and seize opportunities. They see Africa as a location where the Chinese Communist Party is actively trying to change international rules-based order, aiming to become the global hegemon. Additionally, Russia is taking advantage of chaos and instability in the region.
General Langley believes it is essential to deter these nations and their malevolent actors from achieving their goals. This meeting is happening while Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Brussels, attempting to reassure NATO allies of the US commitment to the alliance.
There are concerns among military alliance allies about any reduction in American troops or support in the region. However, the US defense department has not made any public proposals to cut force levels in Africa.
