US Senator Ted Cruz from Texas has cautioned that imposing Donald Trump’s “liberation day” tariffs for an extended period could lead to a major electoral defeat for Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections, potentially causing a political “bloodbath” if a recession occurs.
The senator warned that ongoing tariffs, which may provoke global retaliation, could escalate into a full-blown trade war. This conflict would not only destroy jobs in the US but also inflict significant harm on the American economy.
Cruz emphasized that the American economy, unlike a century ago, now wields considerable influence. He expressed concern that certain voices within the current administration may favor the indefinite continuation of these tariffs.
In his appearance on the Verdict podcast, Cruz’s comments highlighted a growing unease within the Republican party regarding the imposition of “reciprocal” tariffs on imported goods.
Adding to this concern, Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa introduced bipartisan legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Maria Cantwell, seeking to grant Congress more authority over trade policy and tariff imposition.
Other Republican Senators, including Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, Jerry Moran, and Thom Tillis, have shown their support for the bill. Despite its largely symbolic nature, it signals an apprehension among Republicans regarding the recent decline in stock market capitalization and potential electoral repercussions triggered by the Trump administration’s policies.
Cruz predicted that the short-term consequences of tariffs and eventual trade retaliation could lead to a recession. Such an economic downturn may result in a landslide defeat for Republicans, potentially resulting in a Democrat-led House and possibly even Senate.
He further argued that voters would blame the party in power if they face economic hardships during a recession. Cruz disagreed with the administration’s stance that the tariffs would lead to a thriving economy.
In the event that retaliatory tariffs are implemented by “every other country on earth,” Cruz said that maintaining Trump’s tariffs would yield disastrous outcomes, including job loss and damage to the US economy.
However, Cruz extended a conciliatory gesture towards the administration, stating his desire for the success of the policy. He defined success differently, emphasizing the reduction of tariffs both internationally and domestically, which he believes would benefit American workers, businesses, and promote economic growth and prosperity.
