Zimbabwe’s president intends to lift import taxes on goods originating from the United States.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, the President of Zimbabwe, announced on Saturday his intention to lift tariffs on all products imported from the United States.

This declaration came soon after US President Donald Trump’s imposition of an 18% duty on Zimbabwean exports entering the US market.

Through a post on the social medium, X, Mnangagwa framed the decision as a step towards fostering a “mutually beneficial and positive relationship” with the Trump administration.

According to data from the US government, the trade volume between the two nations reached $111.6 million in 2024.

Zimbabwe primarily conducts trade with the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, and China, with its modest exports to the US mainly consisting of tobacco and sugar.

Tendai Mbanje, a political analyst based in Harare, spoke to the AFP news agency, expressing the belief that this move will primarily benefit the United States.
