In 2024, over 40 percent of the world’s electricity was generated from low-carbon sources, a record not surpassed since the 1940s, according to the clean energy think tank Ember. Today, solar energy is taking the lead in the race towards a completely clean electricity system. Global solar generation has become large enough to power an entire country like India, Ember’s Global Electricity Review found. Despite a record-breaking year for solar power, CO2 emissions in the power sector hit an all-time high due to the increased demand for cooling technology during heatwaves. Europe stands out as a leader in clean power, generating 71 percent of its electricity from clean sources in 2024. Southern Europe topped the global solar generation rankings, highlighting the versatility of solar technology.
