Police removed two homophobic banners targeting Labor MP Julian Hill that were displayed on a major Melbourne highway on Friday morning. The banners, which attacked Hill for being gay, sparked bipartisan condemnation and were described by Victoria police as an example of “hate-based behaviour” that would not be tolerated. Despite being a gay man and not having a husband, Hill stated that he will always stand up for everyone in his electorate. The Coalition’s campaign spokesperson, James Paterson, also condemned the posters, stating that they “have no place in Australian politics.”
