According to President Vladimir V. Putin, Russia’s economy has accomplished significant self-sufficiency and shifted towards novel markets despite Western sanctions. However, there is a particular company that Russian officials admit they miss: Boeing. The company has played a crucial role in Russia’s economy by connecting its cities. Yet, as the situation stood before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Boeing performed operations in Russia, including selling and maintaining planes and operating a design center there. President Trump’s rapprochement with Moscow has raised questions about whether American businesses that left Russia during the war will return, with Boeing being an early test case for this matter. Critics remain skeptical about Boeing’s potential return, citing the damage that the war has inflicted on Russia’s standing in the corporate world. Additionally, while Russia’s economy has managed to withstand sanctions and pivot away from the West, its commercial airline fleet still relies heavily on jets made by Boeing and Airbus. These challenges may affect Boeing’s potential return to Russia, and even if it does come back, the relationship would likely be different from before the invasion.
